Transportation

Motorcycle is the main form of transportation in Cambodia. A law requiring drivers to wear helmets went into effect in January, penalizing them by a mere 3000 riel (75 cents). The law doesn’t apply to passengers so even fewer passengers wear helmets. The other day I saw an accident… the guy was propelled off his motorbike as it slammed into the road. His helmet bounced right off his head as he bounced into the road. Not sure what he thought the purpose of an unsecured helmet was but as soon as he was on his feet he went to retrieve it from the side of the road.

Even more scary is they way Khmer women tend to ride, side-saddle.

Some even do it on a bicycle…

How many people can you fit in a truck?

Another common site. One bike? Expanding family? No problem!

Though this isn’t as bad as the babies dangling off the motorbikes, secured only by their mother’s hand.
